Ideas for locations
When we remake the video to James Bay - When we were on fire we want to make it as accurate to the lyrics as possible, he talks about fire a lot so we thought it would be a good idea to have a guitar being played around a campfire on a beach. This will be shown similar to a flashback in the video, showing the past that the boy misses what he use to have with his girlfriend as that is what we feel the lyrics suggest. Sitting around the campfire as a group can show that what they had was 'On fire' as he puts it.
Thorndon Park is a good location for us to film because the scenery is a nice place to walk. Suggesting that when we film the girl and the boy can be holding hands with the camera shot behind them. Again this will be a flashback because the majority of the song is about how the boy used to be with the girl and that they are losing what they had, so we could film them walking around the park and the girl slowly fading away.
As a group we said that Southend-on-sea was a very suitable place to film part of our song. The reasoning for this is because it has a lot of good scenery that would fit the genre of the song. The beach is perfect for our video as the guitar can be played with all of our actors sitting around the campfire and then the next shot can be of the waves crashing or slowly coming in. Southend also has arcades along the beach side which will represent how much fun the boy and girls relationship used to be.
This is a picture of a hill over looking fields and landscape in the distance. There is a hill pretty much the same as this at Thorndon Park which we are going to use, playing a guitar on a hill overlooking distant scenery can represent the sadness in the singer. This part of the song will be done as an individual singing, instead of a group shot, to represent the loneliness and sadness of the singer.
This image is from a London train station. We thought of the idea of creating a time lapse video of people walking past one of our characters. This shot would show the fast paced life people live compared to the actors. This would link to the lyrics because of the sadness that he is singing about. And by the character standing still show how he has been affected and cant enjoy his life like everyone else it.
This is a image of Trafalgar Square in London. We wanted to use this location in our music video because this is a very lively place due to the large crowds and different tourist places and objects surrounding that area. It would make a great shot of two characters arguing in the middle with everyone still walking around them and continuing with their daily activities.
Costume ideas
For the costume of our main characters we have a lot of ideas for the potential costume they will be wearing. And here i have brainstormed 3 potential outfits to choose from. We wanted to try and incorporate the songs genre into the choice of clothing by a sort of indie/vintage style. We also want to make the outfits look quite natural so our video doesn't look forced and really set up like it has been organised from a script.

Video Inspiration
We came across this video when we were researching music videos that have been previously created, which were of the same genre as what we want to create. This video is very helpful to our group not only because it is the same genre, but it also allows us to broaden our ideas for our different shots. This is to make sure not only do they look good, but they also are in relation to the genre of the song. Also because it has been created by a previous year 13 group we know we could create something just as good, because they didn't have the cameras and accessories that production companies are able to use.

James Bay Images
I decided to create a picture video that included lots of different images of James Bay. The reason i have done this is because he is the artist we are going to use for our A2 course. So by putting lots of pictures together, it has allowed me and my group members to get a better feeling for his personality. This is so we can try to incorporate this into our music video when we come to creating it. This will really help us to get better ideas for the more simple things such as props and costumes that our characters will be wearing. As we have never created a video of this genre we needed to do this, in order to broaden our knowledge about the chosen genre. This is going to help us to make the best music video we can. I have also added one of his songs over the pictures so the audience can see both what he looks like, and what his voice sounds like.

Conventions of dance music
Conventions of dance music
Cinematography-
Handheld camera-work- The use of this allows to add excitement, as there are not still shots. This really helps to re create a party with the camera work.
There is a very wide range of camera work and shots which help to deliver different feeling throughout the video. However there are a lot of close-ups as these allow the viewer to see the facial expressions of the people in the video.
Mise-en-scene-
Lots of different scene from night clubs and other party venues, with lots of bright colours and flashing lights to re create a party.
Lots of people dancing- anything from break dancing, street dancing, raving or any other form of dancing. This shows people having a good time which should link to the rhythm of the song.
The actors in the video should be people in there late teens to early 20's as this is the main age range for partying and going to night clubs.
Lots of summary scenes which put people in a good mood-(beach scenes)
Girls wearing bikinis and men in swimming shorts. As this will show the nice weather and people having a good time.
High key lighting
Fun and happy atmosphere
Sound-
Upbeat music – because this type of music makes you want to dance, and it makes you happy.
Repetitive drum beat to keep the rhythm going.
Majority of the song would be produced sounds – techno/ electronic style.
Editing-
Fast paced and to the beat – A cut to a new shot is usually every 1 or 2 seconds
Usually cut together to tell a narrative – a cliché example would be a relationship between a male and a female
An example of this would be David Guetta 'when love takes over' featuring Kelly Rowland. The video shows the viewer David preparing for a DJ set with all of his mixing equipment. We also see Kelly Rowland walking in the bright sun in a seaside location. A lot of the cinematography is handheld as this adds to the excitement of the video. There are also many different close-ups of Kelly Rowland singing throughout the video. At the end of the video we see a night club/party scene which is very usual within the dance genre. Instead of the conventional use of flashing lights, in this video we see people juggling with fire as this is a different way of using bright lights.

Mood board
Overall from creating this mood board i feel like it is going to help our group get our basic ideas for the music video, as it gives us somewhere to start from. However i will make sure i do create a more detailed mood board as this mood board doesn't include a sufficient amount for our final video.
'Let It Go' by James Bay - Burberry Acoustic
This was one of our choices for our music video. The reason we chose this song was not only because their wasn't a video for it, but also because he has a brilliant voice. The song has a very relaxing feeling to it but at the same time when he sings the chorus it picks up again. We also felt we could make a very good song for this video. This is because we felt like we could come up with lots of different shots and easily relate the video to the lyrics. Also two of our group members play guitar, so we would be able to figure out how to play the song. This would mean that we could make our video as realistic to the song as possible.
Editing Practice
Editing practice- Speed
In this video I practice with changing the speed of two different skateboarding clips. The beginning of both videos is the normal pace, and I then edited the next bit of the video to be a much slower speed. By doing this i was able to really show of the trick that the skateboarder was doing. This means the viewer can also identify and see what and how he is doing that specific trick. I believe this could be a very effective thing to put into our music video, because it stops the video from being one paced and adds a different feeling to it. This means we are able to promote specific shots we are proud of. This tool can also be used to increase the speed of clips.
Editing Practice
Editing practice- Reverse shot
In the clip we can see that the video plays the way it should first and then once the clip has fully played it then reverses back to the beginning. We wanted to practice this because we believe that it will give our video a slight difference to the regular videos as it is exciting yet very effective at the same time. If we wouldn't of practised doing this, when it came to making our music video we may not of been able to use this type of editing, as we wouldn't of known how to do it. Also because our genre is quite distinct and individual I feel this type of technique helps to portray our individuality.

Riptide- Vance Joy essay
Riptide- Vance joy
The song riptide is a song by an Australian
singer-songwriter called Vance joy. It was first released as a track from his
debut EP ‘God Loves You When
You're Dancing which was released in 2013. The song is also going to be featured on his debut album
‘dream your life away’. The song comes under the genre of indie folk/pop music.
For a quite unknown singer this song has very much made his career as his You
Tube video has over 21 million views, more than many popular artists in today’s
charts. Riptide peaked at number ten in the United Kingdom and entered
Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, peaking at number 1.
The genre indie folk arose in the 1990s from
musician who were in the indie rock community and were influence by folk music.
Indie folk include the melodies from indie rock but with the acoustic sounds
such as guitars and ukuleles that would be used in folk and classical music. We
know that riptide comes under this genre because the song includes the
attributes of a folk song such as the guitar and ukulele that is very dominant
throughout the song and makes up the beat and the rhythm of the song. There are
also many other instruments used which are more distinctive. This makes up the
folk/indie idea of the song and the pop side comes from the fast and upbeat
tempo of the song. Pop songs are known for being upbeat and faster than the
folk genre so combining the two together makes the genre indie folk/pop.
Although the music video was
shot in the modern era it has a very vintage/indie feel to it. The reason for
this is because there is lots of different clothing and objects that are not
used in today modern society. An example of this would be the clothing that one
of the lady characters wears. She is wearing a thick
brown valour blazer and skirt with a mustard colour jumper. In today’s society
this would be seen as a very old fashioned vintage piece of clothing that no
one would really wear. And by including this in the music video helps steer
away from the typical modern video wearing new clothes. This also helps to
provide the audience with a better understanding of why the genre of the video
is indie. Another way that the indie era is shown is by the clothing of one of
the male characters. We see him wearing a red white and green striped shirt
that looks very washed out which gives it a vintage look. He is also wearing
big round sunglasses which a metal bar across the top which are not your
typical modern sunglasses. They look very vintage that once again ties in the
indie genre.
The purpose behind the music video is for
entertainment purposes. The main reason for this is because it doesn’t actually
include Vance Joy himself, so he isn’t trying to promote himself through the
video. By making a video for entertainment it means he can use whatever and
whoever he wants in his video. This also means he can make the video however he
wants because he hasn’t got to make sure he includes himself in a certain
amount of shots. Vance joy’s video very much links to the quote “music videos
exist as an art form that you enjoy and are entertained by”. I believe that by
following this quote you are much more likely to create a popular and exciting
music video for everyone to like as you haven’t just based it around making
yourself more well-known. However all music videos are still a form of
promotion but some are more based around that than others.
Throughout the video there the clothing that the
actors are wearing are actually very similar. They all appear to be vintage as
it includes paisley shirts, big sunglasses, high wasted shorts and lots of
washed out colours. Not only is this stereotyping the actors but it also ties
in again with the genre. This also helps us as the audience get a better
understanding for the singer. The reason for this is because the video portrays
what he likes and what his personality and dress sense would be like. Another
prop that we see is a video. In today’s modern society we use DVD’s, online
streaming and many other ways of watching films being videos the most unused and
outdated way. There are also clips of someone doing math work using a book to
help them, where in today’s society people would use the Internet, as it is
quicker and easier to use. This really portrays the vintage era that the music
video is portraying.
The narrative behind the story is generally quite
confusing this is because it accompanied by a vast majority of images in a very
fast paced motion. This does mean it is hard to follow but the pictures are
self-centred around the lyrics. There isn’t actually a specific narrative to
the song because the different clips are literal interpretations of the lyrics
from the song. This isn’t what your conventional music video would be like but
it helps put a different twist on the song and bring out the true personality
of the artist, as he obviously likes to be different. This is how the
music fits with the lyrics an example of this is he sings, “I was scared of
dentists…” which is accompanies by this image:
This shows exactly how the lyrics interpret the
clips, because the girl is going under dental work, and her facial expressions
show that she is very scared. This technique is used throughout the video, so
the viewers can watch how the lyrics are put into perspective.
One of the main editing techniques that are used
in the video is sharp cut shots, this helps to give the video more of an edgy
feel. The camera has been used with a different lens that gives the clips a
different colour and texture, and the one that is used gives it more of a
vintage look. Therefore the actual video itself is quite simple with a number
of clips, pictures and shots blended together. The camerawork is very much
built up of just close ups. This is because the close ups are of objects or
people relating to the lyrics. Therefore this means that the specific shot is
focusing on the main object so looking at many different things doesn’t confuse
the audience. This really helps to show the comparison between the clips and
lyrics and how they relate. An example of this is when he sings “I was scared
of dentists and the dark” and we can see a close up of a chandelier that is
being turned off. Once again this is shown throughout the whole music video.
AS/A2 coursework essay
Evaluating my AS work
Research & Planning
Over the year 12 AS course we were set many different
challenges and tasks and were asked to upload them to our blog. For our main
task we were put into groups of three and we were asked to create a film
opening of our choice of genre. In order to do this our group had to carry out
lots of research on film openings, as we didn’t have any idea on what and how
to create one. One of the first things we did was to brain storm some ideas
that we had. This included the genre, actors, story line and possible
locations. After a few lessons of deciding what to do we finally came up with
our film opening idea. We were going to create a horror opening based on an
abandoned hospital. However this
location was the next problem that we ran into, finding an abandoned warehouse
that was local and that we could get access to was going to be a hard task.
After some phone calls and browsing the Internet we finally found a local place
that we could use. It was called Warley Hospital and we were able to get access
to the old hospital wards were the patients stayed. After we had sorted the
genre and got the location we next had to think about the target audience. We
decided to target our film opening at 15-late 20 year olds. We thought that
this would give us a good range and would allow us to incorporate more things
that wouldn’t be as suitable for younger teenagers. From this we were also able
to adapt and put together a narrative for what was going to happen in our film
opening. We would not have been able to do this if we didn’t sort out our
target audience, because what we included may have been inappropriate. Another very vital piece of information that
we had to create was a risk assessment sheet. A risk assessment sheet allows us
to look at the possible dangers and what we are going to do to overcome these.
It would allow tell us whether the location we were going to film was too much
of a risk.
We did also carry out many other different pieces of
research and planning and from doing this it really helped us with our film. We
were able to create production logos by researching existing ones, make sure we
chose camera shots that were typical of our genre and followed the conventions
of a film opening. Without doing this research we would never have been able to
create our film opening. The reason for this is because we would have been
stuck to think about every shot we were going to do, the actors, location and
many other things. If I were to evaluate my own performance of the research and
planning section, I feel I did do very well. The reason for this is because I
carried out a lot of research by myself. For instance I created the risk
assessment sheet by myself. This involved me looking for the potential hazards
and finding ways of overcoming these in order for it to be a safe environment
for my group to film in. I also researched many different production logos from
existing films, and from this I created a range of logos for my group to choose
the best one. I felt very strongly about creating a well-designed logo as this
is the first thing viewers will see when they watch our film opening. However
along with the strengths I did have a few weaknesses with this section. For
instance I did struggle to get the research done in a specific time frame, this
is because I would start one thing not finish it and then start another piece
of research. This did lead me to having unfinished work, but I stopped doing
this, went back to finish what I started, and then I carried on with my newer
work. In order to develop my skills further for my A2 course there would be
many things that I would in fact change. One of these things would be to make
sure that I keep up to date on the research and planning. This is so I don’t
fall behind on work and don’t have to make up for being behind at a later date.
Another thing would be to actually do a much wider range of research. The
reason for this is because the main research that I and my group done was
revolved around only a few certain things. Therefore by widening this research
would allow us to create a better and more detailed video, which would be able
to reflect our skills we have attained through the research. Another very big
factor that I will make sure I create for my A2 course is a storyboard. A storyboard
allows us to look at what is going to happen throughout our video. It will help
us plan each shot out properly so we have a good basis to follow.
Following the conventions of real media text
When it came to the film conventions our group had to make
sure we followed the conventions of a horror film. As we didn't know what the
conventions were, we had to research this and then put it in to context. From
research we found that the first shot of film openings should be an
establishing shot. The reason for this shot is to allow the audience to get an
idea of where the film is taking place. This also sets the scene and gives the
audience a good idea about the genre. Another important convention for a film
opening is having a soundtrack. Typically the music should start off slow paced
and as the opening unfolds get faster paced. As our genre was horror we chose a
soundtrack that would give the audience suspension, but also following the
convention. Introducing the main character is another very important convention.
By doing this so soon allows the audience to get a feel for who is going to be
the most important character and then see other characters of a similar
importance. Every film opening has a production logo at the beginning and
without one the opening would be seen as just a film clip. Production logos are
also specific for the genre, this is why our group created a logo that was
related to out genre of horror. These are just a few conventions of a film
opening and by following these it would allow us to create a successful and
enjoyable film opening for the audience. If we didn’t follow these conventions
it would lead to our opening being very dull and boring, and would not make
people want to watch it. In order to improve on my A2 course I would make sure
that we followed more conventions. This is because for our film opening we
started of following the conventions and then started to make our own shots and
conventions up. This did mean we would of lost marks from the examiner. So we
will make sure when we create our music video we follow the specific
conventions to get the best grade possible.
Mise en scene was also very important when creating our film
opening. The reason for this is because if we didn’t follow this convention it
could make our opening seem different to what it actually was. For instance we
made a horror opening, so if we chose a setting that had children playing, were
sunny and looked like a nice place it would make people think our opening is of
the horror genre. Lighting another form of mise en scene is also a vital aspect
that could make our film opening a different genre. As our genre was horror we
had to choose a setting that had low-key lighting. Low-key lighting helps to
give a mysterious and rather scary feeling, and this is exactly what we wanted
in our opening. The beginning of our film opening we
wanted to make it appear old, mysterious and decrepit. Towards the end of our
film opening we used a natural lighting and didn’t use any effects when it came
to editing. This allowed us to show how the clip was up to date and based in a
different environment.
For my A2 course one of the main things I would make sure I
done was used more camera shots that were specific for the genre I choose. The
reason for this is because in my film opening I didn’t use enough close ups to
show the facial expressions of the characters. This was a very important
aspect, as it would have massively improved our video, by portraying the genre
more clearly. Overall I would make sure I planned the mise en scene better to
allow me to incorporate this into our music video with ease.
creativity & originality
When looking back at our film opening I feel our group did
do quite well at following the conventions of a horror film opening. But I feel
we added our own touch to the video very well. We wanted to do this so our
video would stand out from others, and show that you do not always have to
follow a strict set of rules. The beginning of our film opening was all in
black and white. We wanted to do this to give the audience something to think
about, and to be curious to why it is in black and white. This also made our
shots fit in with the genre better. We also incorporated verbal speech into our
opening in one of the clips. As the opening consisted of background music,
which is also typical of film openings, by adding a few seconds of speech, we
thought this would give it our own feel, and also make the audience more
curious as to what is going to happen. We also wanted to use more handheld
shots, the reason for doing this is because we felt it would make it more edgy
for the audience and show that the film is based around everyday people, and
this created an enigma for the audience to think about. We were also original
with our opening by creating good suspense of what was going on. We done this
by not giving the setting away instantly and because of this it would make the
audience want to watch on.
For our A2 course we also want to keep a good sense of originality as it really shows off our own interest and personalities to the exam board. This would help them understand why we chose to do what we did. But bearing in mind we will also be following the conventions of a music video, as we have never created one before.

Find out what it means to me
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take care, TCB
Oh (sock it to me, sock it to me,

A little respect (sock it to me, sock it to me,
sock it to me, sock it to me)
Whoa, babe (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)

A little respect (just a little bit)
Marketing Techniques
Twitter is a online social networking site that allows people to follow other people, view their tweets and write tweets of their own. This is a very popular application and is available on mobile platforms. The application rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with more than 100 million users who in 2012 posted 340 million tweets per day.
Lana del rey is a very well known and popular singer who puts her own edge on things. She has her own twitter account and has over 4 million followers and has tweeted over 600 tweets. This isn't very few compared to most musicians but this doesnt stop her being a popular figure.

Good use of a new web 2.0 tool. Clear annotations
of the key features. Looking at a few different genres.

Areas to work on next/ ideas to consider

You need to explicitly explain the purpose of
these features and say how they link to genre and audience. Reflect on what
this has taught you. Ensure you explain the main conventions for all music
websites.
